Early detection saves lives—protect your health with regular oral cancer screenings.
According to the Dental Association, oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer and can develop in various areas of the mouth and throat, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor, roof, and sinuses. Routine checkups allow our dentist to examine your mouth for early signs, even though oral cancer is rare unless you use tobacco or have a family history. An oral cancer screening is a standard part of your dental visit, and we encourage patients to follow up with their doctor for any visible lesions, lumps, or bumps.
General health, medications, and allergies.
Tobacco and alcohol use.
Symptoms of oral pain or discomfort.
We then perform a detailed examination, inspecting and palpating the head, neck, lips, and oral tissues, focusing on high-risk areas like the tongue, floor of the mouth, and soft palate. Early detection is key to effective treatment.
While symptoms of oral cancer may result from less serious conditions, they should always be checked during your routine visit. Common signs include:
- Red or white spots or sores in the oral cavity.
- A sore that bleeds easily or doesn’t heal.
- A lump, thickened or rough spot.
- Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth or lips.
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue.
If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact our office promptly for an evaluation.
Oral cancer screenings involve a thorough examination of the entire oral cavity to detect cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions.
1. Early Stages: Treated with surgery or radiation.
2. Advanced Stages: Combines surgery and radiation.
3. Late Stages: Typically involves radiation and chemotherapy, with or without surgery.
Preventing oral cancer starts with lifestyle choices:
1. Avoid tobacco products and limit alcohol intake.
2. Maintain a balanced diet.
3. Limit sun exposure to protect your lips.
Additionally, certain types of HPV are linked to throat cancer. Avoid risky behaviors and consider the HPV vaccine to reduce your risk.
