Dental cavities, or caries, are caused by tooth decay and can affect patients of all ages. Factors like oral bacteria, sugary diets, and poor oral hygiene contribute to their development.
Cavities result from a mix of poor oral hygiene, dietary habits, and bacterial activity. Plaque, formed by bacteria feeding on sugars, produces acids that erode enamel, leading to decay. Sugary and acidic foods heighten the risk by feeding bacteria and weakening enamel. Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque to harden into tartar, increasing the likelihood of decay. Reduced saliva, caused by certain medications or conditions, also limits the mouth's ability to neutralize acids. Preventing cavities involves regular oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and routine dental check-ups.
Cavities can present as toothaches, sensitivity, visible holes, or discoloration. Early detection is key to effective treatment. Types of cavities include:
Smooth Surface Cavities: Develop on flat tooth surfaces due to plaque buildup.
Pit and Fissure Cavities: Form in the grooves of molars and premolars, making them hard to clean.
Pit and Fissure Cavities: Occur on exposed roots due to gum recession, progressing rapidly.
Root Cavities: Found on the visible surface of the tooth, affecting enamel and dentin.
Recurrent Cavities : Develop around existing dental work due to material breakdown.
Baby Bottle Tooth Decay: Affects toddlers exposed to sugary liquids, especially at bedtime.
Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene help detect and prevent cavity progression.
Treatments aim to restore the tooth’s structure and function:
Fillings: Remove decay and fill the space with composite, amalgam, or porcelain.
Crowns: Cover and protect severely weakened teeth.
Root Canal Treatment: Treat decay that reaches the pulp, saving the tooth.
Tooth Extraction: Remove teeth too damaged to restore.
Prevention includes brushing twice daily, flossing after meals, using fluoride, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding tobacco. Dental sealants and regular check-ups every 4-6 months also help protect against cavities.
