Maintaining good oral health at home helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other issues while allowing our team to address problems early. Here are a few tips to build a strong at-home oral care routine.
Make flossing a daily habit to remove plaque from areas your toothbrush can’t reach. By flossing at least twice a day and after meals, you can prevent cavities and gum disease, keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities. For children under 3, use a tiny smear, and for ages 3 to 6, a pea-sized amount is perfect. Fluoride is safe when used correctly and helps protect your enamel from decay.
Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head to reach all your teeth comfortably. Replace it every three months or when the bristles wear out. Brush gently at a 45-degree angle, twice a day for two minutes. Avoid brushing too hard to protect your gums and enamel.
Incorporate mouthwash into your routine to reduce plaque and gingivitis. If alcohol-based mouthwash irritates your mouth, switch to an alcohol-free option. Follow the instructions on the bottle for the best results.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. It helps keep your mouth moist, reducing plaque buildup and supporting saliva production, which protects your teeth from decay.
Cut back on sugary snacks and acidic drinks like soda and juice. These can weaken your enamel and lead to cavities. When you can’t avoid them, enjoy them with meals and drink water to help neutralize harmful acids.
Be mindful of habits like smoking, excessive drinking, nail-biting, or chewing on hard objects, which can harm your teeth. Avoid oral piercings and address clenching or grinding to protect your teeth, jaw, and overall oral health.
